Ambarawa, Pekalongan and Jatibarang, November 1976.

After spending a day traveling and a day looking around Semerang and seeing no trains at all we hired a car and driver to take us to Ambarawa museum. We were taken to the war museum where B2501, an 0-4-2RT, was plinthed with a coach, but nothing else relating to railways. We were told this was the only museum but we could go to the railway station to have a look. We drove down the hill, turned right, and there before us was a huge field full of steam locomotives, mostly in immaculate condition. In addition another B25 rack tank was in steam, maybe having just arrived with a 2-coach passenger train which was still in the station, and two more were inside the shed. We left when a huge thunderstorm struck. Two days later we took a train from Semerang to Jakarta. At Pekalongan we passed an 0-4-0 tender loco on a passenger train which I recorded in cine film as it departed. Several similar locos were seen in steam at Tegal from a distance as we passed. Several D52's, C28's and a C11 were seen at Cirebon and B5008 was in steam at Jatibarang. A few D52's were seen between there and Jakarta and a number of locomotives were stored at Karawang but it was getting too dark for photography..

The above pictures were taken at the Ambarawa War Museum.

The following pictures were all taken at Ambarawa depot and station area.

This final picture from Ambarawa was a single frame from a cine-film.

The following pictures were taken from our train at Pekalongan. The 0-4-0 tender loco was waiting in the bay as we pulled in but by the time I had got through the crowds to an exit where I could photograph it it was already leaving.

This would have been the branch train to Kedungwuni.

We only saw the depot at Tegal after we had passed as we had seats on the wrong side. At that time we had no data on what could be found where, we had been living in Singapore for many years with no books or magazines available. The next place we got photographs was at Cirebon.

The depot at Cirebon contained C11's, B13's, C28's and D52's in steam but few were positively identified.

Djatibarang was next  to produce steam in the shape of 2-4-0 B5008.

We passed Tjikampek and Karawang fairly fast so got no photos and few details, though there were lots of locos at Karawang including several D14s a NG locos. It was dark by the time we reached the outskirts of Jakarta and a steam-hauled freight running alongside blocked any views of the depot at Djatinegara and we left the train at Pasar Senen.
