Java, Indonesia, October/November 1976.
Photographs of the railways around Yogyakarta, Madiun, Surakarta, Ambarawa and Jatibarang
This page shows photographs taken in and around Yogyakarta in October 1976.
This was my first visit to Indonesia and I had no prior knowledge of what to expect, apart from a neighbour telling me that he had seen steam-hauled coal trains somewhere in Indonesia during a business trip, and a note in a guide book stating that "ancient trains" could be seen at Madiun.
There are 68 photographs on this page so please be patient while they all load. Clicking on each thumbnail will display a larger picture of around 640 x 480 pixels, although some are larger and some smaller. The photographs are displayed in the order in which they were taken and you will notice that on this page there are a lot of diesels and all the steam locomotives are of the same class, D52 2-8-2's. Fortunately this situation changed dramatically over the next few days and by the end of the holiday I had photographed more than 25 different steam classes, several of them still active. Subsequent visits in 1977, 1985 and 1987 produced even more, although by the latter year only two were in steam. Surprisingly, one of these was built in 1879, so was 108 years old!
